The Rock as a Hair Icon

The Rock as a Hair Icon

There’s a certain amount of irony when saying that Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson is a hairstyle icon. However, he’s universally known, so he can be considered an icon in any discipline. While he’s had the trademark shaved head for years now, he’s had many looks over the years. To celebrate the release of his latest movie, ‘Red One’, we at Crazy Bull review some of his best looks from his storied career.

1996 Survivor Series

When the Rock debuted in the WWF, he wasn’t known by that moniker. He was labelled: ‘Rocky Maivia’. This version didn’t sit well with the crowd, especially when he made his in-ring debut at the 1996 Survivor Series. Despite performing well alongside stars like Triple H, Jerry Lawler and Goldust, he was booed viciously.

During this era, he sported a floppy and choppy hairstyle, which suited the strange tassels he wore to the ring. If you want to look as daft as Dwanye did here, you can grab your Bull Blaster Pomade and work it through your hair to emulate the shiny style that Maivia exhibited when he made his way down to the ring at Madison Square Garden.

The Black Turtleneck and Chain Look

Long before John Cena set up the Chain Gang (or the Cenation), there was a fanfare for the Rock and his newfound style. After ditching his original persona, he was given the license to portray a cocky heel who would dress with swagger and street cred. The best early example was when he sported the iconic black turtleneck shirt and thick silver chain.

His hair was on point here, with a sculpted quiff-like style. Given the popularity of this photo, many have recreated it, including himself many years later and even Rhea Ripley. Want to do it yourself? Consider your hair type. Thicker hair will need just a bit of Space Dust, while those with thicker hair may benefit from our hair styling clay, Clay Play.

Sharp Shirts and Sideburns

By the turn of the millennium, the Rock was starting to transcend the fame of the wrestling ring. After two appearances on That ‘70s Show and even Star Trek, Hollywood wanted a piece of him. In the era between wrestling full-time and becoming a servant to the silver screen, he sported some exceptionally jazzy shirts accompanied by some outrageous sideburns.

He’d keep this look until late 2001 and the point of his departure from the WWE (after Summerslam 2002), when he was rocking a more generic sporty look. His hairline was receding, so he kept it tight and groomed, potentially with a hair stylist powder like Space Dust.

The Hereculan Hair

Did anyone want a live-action re-make of Hercules? We got it anyway, with Dwayne Johnson playing the lead role as the legendary Greek hero. The film still stands up as an action movie, even if the plot isn’t as good by contemporary standards. Also, it’s an excellent opportunity to see the Rock with longer hair; if his look inspires you - you can achieve something similar (provided you’ve got a similar length already) with Bull Blaster Sea Salt Spray to add volume to your hair - much like Hercules has in this film.
